How to Get Ubuntu to Install Kodi on PS4?
PS4 consoles don’t support EXE files. So you can’t install Kodi on your PlayStation devices. Thus, you need to install Linux (Ubuntu) first.
In simple words, you need to create a bootable Ubuntu USB. For that you will need a 16GB flash drive, Ubuntu OS, and Linux Boot loader for PS4.
Besides it, you need to install Virtual Box, which is a virtual machine software to run Ubuntu OS).
Now, you will need to follow certain steps to create USB bootable Ubuntu –
How to Create Bootable Ubuntu USB?
In the homepage of Virtual Box software, select “New”. Give a name for the virtual machine.
Click on the “type” drop down menu and select Linux. The version will be Ubuntu 64 bit.
Click on Next and allocate an appropriate amount of memory (minimum should be 2 GB).
Another screen will appear in which you need to check the box near “Do not add a virtual drive”. Select next. A warning will appear; click continue.
Now that you have created a virtual machine, go to its setting. On the left hand side, click on storage. Then choose the “empty” option. Add Ubuntu ISO from the virtual optical disk file.
Select Ubuntu disk image.
Now, you shall check the storage tree, where you will see the ISO name. On the left pane, locate the “USB” option and choose it.
Click on “Add drive” located on the right hand side and add the storage location as USB drive.
Now start the Virtual Machine. This step will install all the files on the USB drive.
Now you have to install Ubuntu by selecting the “Install Ubuntu” option.
In the next page select Continue. On the page after that, you will select “Something else” as we will create multiple partitions.
Now, check the device under “Device for bootloader information”. Select continue.
If the previous step is unsuccessful because of shortage of free space, select “/dev/sda”. Then choose a new partition table.
Click on “+” to create a new partition.
Add the PS4 bootloader to USB drive. Select the size as 20 MB. You need to give the primary status to the partition. Make the file system as FAT32. The mount point should be “windows” because we will be adding bootloader file from windows.
Next up, we need to create a partition to install Ubuntu/ Select the partition as primary and file system as EXT2. Next, select “/” and then OK.
Next, verify if there are two partitions. Then click on install now.
When it asks to swap area, click on continue. Another confirmation box will appear Select continue again. Then you will have to choose your region and your language.
Enter your username and password. Ensure that you have clicked on log in automatically.
Now installation will take place. After installation, a black screen will appear. Press Enter. Now shutdown VM, go to File > Close.
Click on Power Off the machine and then on OK.
Your windows will automatically detect the partition. Now open the drive and add the files. You can download the bootloader file from here.
Now you have created your standalone bootable USB Drive. Insert the drive in your PS4 and then follow the below procedure.
How to Install Kodi on Playstation 4?
Insert USB drive and navigate to Settings. There Select User guide.
In the next screen, choose PS4 WebKit playground. It is one of the tools to root or jailbreak your PS4. Follow the below steps to root your PS4.
In the main window, select Linus Loader. Now, the Linus console will appear. Sometimes, the Ubuntu screen might also show up. For further steps, you will need a USB keyboard.
If you don’t get Ubuntu screen, follow these steps. Type “fdisk –l”. A list of available partitions will appear. To mount the Ubuntu partition to the main console, type mount /dev/sdb2newroot/ and press enter.
Next, type exec switch_root/newroot/newroot/sbin/init. A message will appear. Press “S”. Now you have loaded the Ubuntu.
To finally install Kodi on PS4, search for terminal.
Type “sudo apt-get install software-properties-common”.
Select “Yes” when it asks for your permission.
Type the following:
“sudo add-apt-repository ppa:team-xbmc/ppa”
“sudo apt-get update”
Wait for a while for the update to complete. Type “sudo apt-get install kodi”.
In a few minutes, your Kodi is installed. When it asks for permission, type “YES”.
