I thought this picture was fitting amidst all of the controversy surrounding Jay-Z’s alleged sabotage of Chris Brown performing at the BET Awards.

I don’t really hate the internet, I am madly in love with the internet but I feel like there are a few institutions who can gladly hate the internet because it has ruined their business model and life as they know it.

#1: Record Companies: Long gone are the days where they can charge people an exorbitant amount for cd’s . (I once paid 19.99 for Jay-Z’s Reasonable Doubt) The internet has completely disrupted their model of selling records and making boku’s of money off their artists. Thus forcing the record industry to become more creative, something they have failed at doing so far.

#2: Recording Artists: Long gone are the days where we must wait for your new music, your album to drop, or anything else your involved in to drop. Because of the lack of creative music, people simply don’t have to put all their stock into one artist. If that artist chooses not to make their music and or talents readily available we have other mediocre artists that will satisfy our craving.

Also, because of file sharing, we have your cd’s before the people at your listening party have your cd. You never made a lot of money off of your cd anyway, so we thought you wouldn’t mind. Until…. THE EVIL, GREEDY RECORD COMPANIES came up with these 360 deals which now gives them a portion of your touring money. Now that sucks!

#3: Magazines: All of them, long gone are the days where we have to wait until your exclusive story about “so and so” hits the newsstands. Weeks before the intended release date, your cover story hits the internet via our favorite blog sites. We’ve also already seen the photo shoot that will accompany the story and behind the scenes video footage. For the record the writing in many of these magazines has become closer to gossip tabloids rather than good journalism, so when you close your doors, we really don’t care.

#4 News Broadcasts: Long gone are the days where we have to wait to watch your news segment to be depressed about what’s going on in the world. We have facebook, youtube, twitter and a host of other mediums that get us deathly depressing news up to the second in real time, with accompanying horrifying photos and videos. You now report what the real citizen journalists see with your re-posting of what the twitter people are saying and every other social medium.

#5 Porn Industry: Long gone are the days where a man has to travel to his local sleezy porn distributor shop on the other side of town or the bootleg spot on Jamaica Avenue in search of the latest booty shake film. No, now there are a plethora of (insert nasty words here) tube internet websites where men and women can stream the fantasy of their pleasure for free.99. Or porn afficinados can download (once again via file sharing) the latest hardcore scene that their favorite body pillow stars in.

The Internet — f*cking up one industry at a time.

Here’s an honorable mention:

Your not a real rap star until you get some quality hate. I mean some kick a$$ ridicule of the mediocre crap you serve your fans and expect them to eat it up. $hit on a stick is not the new gourmet. Real Drake fans like my man Earl are probably looking at their G1 phones in disgust right now as their once savior of Hip-Hop is turning into something more horrifying to watch than Britney Spears and that gut at the VMA’s.

I just wasted 5 minutes and 30 seconds of my life that I will never get back. NEVER! But maybe I’m being too hard on Drake and his “BEST I ever had” video, after all Kanye, the I’m too busy with my lesbian girlfriend, infatuated with ‘fish sticks’ West directed the piece of crap video that I am speaking of.

Trust me, my hate wouldn’t be so strong if I didn’t have high hopes for Drake, if I didn’t appreciate his artistry and want to see him be the next best thing rather than the next best gimmick.

but slip up and shoot the wrong fucking video and they think they can market you however they decide to – Drake

In sum the video is an ode to juggling boobies, yup just boobies juggling, some tight shorts and tanktops, these are the women of Team Drake. Drake stars in the video as a lousy coach who leads his team of boobies to a terrible 91-14 defeat on the basketball court. The lighting sucks, the highlight for some ladies might be some brief cameos by Fabolous, Consequence and Trey Songz. Other than that it’s just some boobies, a gym, and a really bad game of basketball.  Aside from Drake telling the ladies to “take that d, like the champions that they are” and reminding them all that they can do in 2 minutes (think dirty here) the video is pretty anti-climatic.

His concept of the video reads like this:

The concept of the video is, I’m a coach at a high school and the girls of my life are all on my high school basketball team. Throughout the video you see us prepping for this big championship game, and my team ends up losing. You see the looks on their faces at the end of the video, but the moral of the story, I guess, is win or lose, you can still be the best to somebody. When women see the video and see all the breast and ass, hopefully they don’t take offense. Hopefully they see the real meaning.

Drake do me a favor, I know Kanye West is a star, I know this, but right now you must demand creative control over your album and future videos. And brother if you’re not that creative then hire someone who is because you can not afford to keep putting out misunderstood BS like this. We want real hip-hop, not this crap!

Vibe magaizne was the first magazine I paid for a subscription to. I think I was in junior high school or something. It’s sad to see them go. If you want to check out the cover, which is a topless Dream holdig the breast of a topless Christina Milian then check out Rap Radar. I’ll wait for the cover without the watermark and I’ll update here.

Update: I just went to Vibe.com, no wonder they’re going out of business, every blog on in the world has this cover up before their site even has it up. Maybe there will be multiple covers. smh

It is with a heavy heart that I share some tough news, VMG is closing down effective today, June 30th.

It’s been an 16 incredible years since VIBE’s inception. There are very few magazines with the richness of history and breadth of talented visionaries who created the powerful lens in which VIBE viewed and shaped urban music and culture.

Ever since I first set foot in this courageous company, I’ve regarded myself as incredibly fortunate to be be involved with this remarkable brand and group of individuals whose performance has never been nothing short of outstanding. We finished 2008 in an improved position versus the prior year, and accomplished so much, including:

* Editorial Awards
* Editorial transformation into content dept
* New Ad accounts being broken
* The Most Mag Launch
* Award winning re-design
* Profitable digital operation
* VIBE.com growth and improvements and programs such as  Best Rapper Ever,  #1 Stan, etc
* Mobile VIBE  launch
* Micro-site development Mostmag.com to start off.
* V Sessions
* Improved PR coverage

Unfortunately, over the last several months, a confluence of events has obviously posed VMG to exceedingly serious challenges.

* The collapse of the capital markets has impacted us greatly.  Over the past several months, we have actively pursued investment resources while working intensively with our bank to find a solution. But the deal market right now remains very poor and at the end of the day, the lack of investment resources to restructure the huge debt on our small company has made this outcome become a reality.

* The print advertising collapse hit VIBE hard, especially as key ad categories like automotive and fashion, which represented the bulk of our top 10 advertisers, have stopped advertising or gone out of business. It’s also unfortunate that in a recession many companies reduce the multi-cultural campaigns. These facts, coupled with the continuing decline of the music industry not to mention the newsstand wholesaler consolidation in early 2009 all negatively impacted our business in a significant way.

* The relentless economic situation has depressed our growth initiatives on the digital front. To be clear, VMG has made significant improvement in this part of our business, but not at the accelerated pace required to offset the devastating effects of the most severe recession in our lifetime and the accompanying print losses.

I want to thank you all for your hard work and commitment, and for all of the adventures along the way. I’ll miss this place a lot, but I’ll miss you all and the magic you create.

Vibe will be remembered as a shockingly brilliant content company that everyone can be proud of and I look forward with great excitement to all of future endeavors you all pursue.
