Help Philadelphia kids get off the street

I believe this is a worthy cause to support. Often in Philadelphia we complain about the crime that affects our city, well here is a chance to get some kids off the street and into a moment of history that may completely redirect their path. You can purchase a t-shirt or make a donation towards this worthy campaign at http://nativenotes.net/makeithappen

“GET ON THE BUS”

Philadelphia, PA– President Elect Barack Obama will be sworn into office on Tuesday January 20, 2009 in Washington D.C. Barack Obama’s accomplishment is not just his alone; it is an accomplishment for race relations in America. It is a testament to the many leaders and heroes who sacrificed their lives so that men and women would not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.

The mission of Make It Happen Apparel’s Get On The Bus Campaign is to take 56 people from Philadelphia comprised of college students, high school students, their parents and young professionals of every race to this historic event and return with a mindset to challenge the status quo here in Philadelphia. We have chartered a bus to Washington D.C. for this event leaving from Temple University the morning of January 20, 2009.

In order to bridge the gap between Philadelphia residents, college students and the high school students of Leadership Prepatory Academy in North Philadelphia, we will all travel to the event FOR FREE encouraging relationship building and mentorship amongst the participants! This moment epitomizes the American Dream and is proof that with hard work and dedication, one can truly achieve anything they put their mind to.

The Get On The Bus Campaign is challenging all of us to truly act on the words of President Elect Barack Obama when he asks us to engage ourselves in local politics and the affairs of our communities. “I ask you to believe not just in my ability to bring about change… I’m asking you to believe in yours,” says Barack Obama. By Philadelphians taking the first step in embarking upon this historical journey we hope to build relationships, to create a dialogue about the issues facing our communities and strategize a plan of action to correct the many ills facing Philadelphians.

In order to subsidize the costs for this endeavor we have designed several t-shirts that support Barack Obama, his symbolism of change and evolution. The t-shirts are $19.99, our apparel is dedicated to creating clothing that is stylish and serves a purpose. When Philadelphians support MIH they are giving to a cause in our communities. It is up to our generation to create change, and prompt action not only through our clothing but also through our actions.

ABOUT MAKE IT HAPPEN:

Make It Happen is an organization dedicated to building awareness and mobilizing the resources needed to be successful to under-served communities. We are devoted to promoting community change by bridging the inter-generational gap between youth, young adults and community elders.

ABOUT GET ON THE BUS CAMPAIGN:

The Get On The Bus Campaign is being orchestrated by Cedric Shine and Darian Roopnarine, co-founders of Make It Happen Apparel. Both of these men are Temple University Alumni who during their time at Temple saw that college students and the people who inhabit the neighborhoods around Temple could do more to make North Philadelphia a safer place by working together and forming a coalition against the violence that plagues the City of Philadelphia. By creating relationships between the students and community members both groups become vested in the development of the city, resulting in more students choosing to make Philadelphia their home after graduation because they feel a part of the larger community here.
