Whitney Houston Memorial Tribute

The death of Whitney Houston has been a surreal experience and has brought sadness to millions around the world. Below is the actual going home service program which kind of brings us down to earth in realizing she really is gone. Whitney looks amazing, if only we could have had her a little while longer.

Ida B. Wells

When I think about Ida B. Wells, I remember her most for her anti-lynching campaign. Can you imagine a black woman in the 1920′s going around thumbing her nose at white people who were literally killing blacks “legally”? That’s a woman of courage, we honor your spirit.

Ida Bell Wells-Barnett (July 16, 1862 – March 25, 1931) was an African American journalist, newspaper editor and, with her husband, newspaper owner Ferdinand L. Barnett, an early leader in the civil rights movement. She documented lynching in the United States, showing how it was often a way to control or punish blacks who competed with whites. She was active in the women’s rights and the women’s suffrage movement, establishing several notable women’s organizations. Wells was a skilled and persuasive rhetorician, and traveled internationally on lecture tours.

BLACK HISTORY CHALLENGE 2012

Welp it’s black history month again, the shortest month of the year but this year we get 29 days so be thankful. (insert chuckle) For me celebrating the history of my ancestors is a way of life and not confined to one month however I do appreciate that this month we’ll see more people and companies alike celebrating the contributions that people of the African Diaspora have made over the years.

I’ve decided to do a Black History Challenge where everyday I post something related to people of African descent and their contributions to civilizations around the world. Some days there will be more than others. Yesterday I didn’t do anything at all which is why today you might see a few. I would also appreciate if you would respond in the comments section and add tidbits of information that I can post as well. Remember Knowledge is power! Hotep.

Iggy “Slavemaster” Azalea Signs With Interscope

I was footing around over on Complex and saw that Iggy Azalea signed with Interscope Records (Jimmy Iovine is no stranger to controversy). Don’t know who she is? Neither did I until Toure did that white girl/Hip-hop article in the NYTimes.

In short — she’s from Australia, is of the firm belief that sex will carry her career and she’s a slave master. I’m not here to rile anyone up about a white girl from down under who loves her some 2Pac and probably calls her black boyfriends n***er while they slay her with that Mandingo. I just thought it was interesting. Click the link for yourself!

Ps. I’m sure Iggy has some logical explanation for her “witty” use of the term slave master while she cracks her whip. Maybe because she’s a runaway slave master so she’s not doing it anymore or she’s ehh i don’t know. I’m not cultured enough to catch up. Extreme sells nowadays, get your money boo boo!

Q-Tip Discovers His African Ancestry

I’m feeling this Okay Africa Tv moment helping to link folks up with their ancestry. I would love the opportunity, so if you’re out there crawling the web to find out whose re-posting these videos give your boy a shout. Check out Q-Tip from A Tribe Called Quest and The Roots Crew as they learn more about their ROOTS.
